Host a Ganesh Chaturthi Kirtan at Home | Bay Area | ISKCON SV

Bhagavata Seva Fall 2023 -1

Every Hindu home that celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi knows the particular joy of bringing a Ganesha murti home, installing it with ceremony, performing puja morning and evening for ten days, and then immersing it with full procession and music. That tradition runs deep — it was organized into a public festival by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak as a means of community unity, but its roots are far older, found in the Puranas and in everyday Hindu practice across India. What many families may not know is that there is a profound Vaishnava dimension to Ganesh Chaturthi — one that connects the festival directly to the tradition of devotional service to the Supreme Lord. ISKCON Silicon Valley’s home kirtan program brings that dimension into your celebration.

Among the major devotional community festivals of the Bay Area year, Ganesh Chaturthi shares the late-summer season with Rath Yatra — both draw families together in shared celebration and are celebrated widely across Silicon Valley.

Ganesha in the Brahma-Samhita: A Great Devotee of Govinda

The Brahma-samhita — a text of extraordinary philosophical depth, authored by Brahma himself and recovered by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu at the Adi Kesava temple in Thiruvananthapuram — contains one of the most beautiful descriptions of Ganesha’s relationship with the Supreme Lord. Verse 5.50 describes Ganesha bowing at the lotus feet of Govinda (Krishna), and receiving from those lotus feet the power to remove all obstacles:

I worship Gaṇeśa, who is always worshiped first by the devas. He holds the lotus feet of Govinda within his heart and meditates upon them; by the grace of those lotus feet, he receives the power to remove all obstacles.

— Brahma-samhita 5.50 (paraphrase)

This verse establishes something important: Ganesha’s power to remove obstacles — the very quality for which he is invoked at the beginning of every sacred undertaking — flows directly from his devotion to Govinda. He is not independently empowered; he is a great devotee who has been given a divine role by the Supreme Lord. This makes Ganesh Chaturthi a festival that naturally connects to the tradition of devotional service. Ganesha himself worships Govinda; his most loving act of grace to his own devotees is to clear the path so they can reach the same Lord at whose feet he himself bows.

Who Is Lord Ganesha? The Scriptural Picture

Lord Ganesha appears in the Puranas as the son of Shiva and Parvati, the elephant-headed deity of beginnings, wisdom, and the removal of obstacles. In the broader Vaishnava and Shaiva traditions, he is understood as a cosmic administrator — the presiding deity of the ganas (divine attendants) and the guardian of all sacred beginnings.

In practice, virtually every Hindu ritual begins with Ganesha puja — before a wedding, before a yajna, before building a home, before beginning a business. The Mahabharata tradition credits Ganesha with scribing the epic as Vyasa dictated it, breaking his own tusk to use as a pen when his writing quill wore out. This story beautifully captures Ganesha’s essence: a devoted servant who gives everything — even his own body — for the sake of preserving sacred knowledge.

Ganesh Chaturthi: The Festival of the Cosmic Gatekeeper

Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the fourth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada month — typically in August or September. The ten-day festival (culminating in Anant Chaturdashi) follows the pattern of welcoming Ganesha into the home as a guest, offering him his favorite sweets (modak, laddoo), performing daily puja, and then releasing him with love at the immersion ceremony. In Maharashtra and across South India, the festival is accompanied by devotional songs, community gatherings, and vibrant processions.

In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is chanting the holy names of the Lord.

— Srimad Bhagavatam 12.3.51

Bring a Ganesh Chaturthi Kirtan Into Your Own Home

ISKCON Silicon Valley’s Bay Area home kirtan program is a natural complement to your Ganesh Chaturthi observance. Our devotees come to your home for a two-hour evening of live devotional singing and a short katha on Ganesha’s role as a great devotee of Govinda — drawing from the Brahma-samhita (5.50) and the Puranas. The kirtan includes both traditional Ganesha bhajans and Hare Krishna kirtan, celebrating the connection between Ganesha’s grace and Govinda’s lotus feet from which that grace flows. The arati at the close of the evening can beautifully accompany your existing puja for the Ganesha murti you have installed at home. To book a home kirtan Bay Area session, use the Calendly widget above or send a WhatsApp message.

Many families find that the katha portion — explaining Brahma-samhita 5.50 in accessible language — transforms their relationship with Ganesh Chaturthi. Instead of observing a custom inherited from tradition without fully understanding its depth, they find themselves celebrating a festival that connects every dimension of their devotional life: Ganesha’s grace, the obstacle-free path, and its source in the Lord who is the source of all grace. ISKCON Silicon Valley: The Gaudiya Vaishnava Tradition

ISKCON — the International Society for Krishna Consciousness — was founded by Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in 1966, bringing the Gaudiya Vaishnava lineage from Bengal to the world. ISKCON Silicon Valley in Mountain View has served the Bay Area since 1968. The Gaudiya tradition’s understanding of Ganesha as a great devotee of Govinda — rather than as a separate or competing deity — allows ISKCON devotees to honor Ganesh Chaturthi with genuine reverence and philosophical clarity.
