Bhagavata Seva Fall 2023 -1

Long before Holi became famous for its color-throwing celebrations, it was a deeply devotional festival rooted in two of the most vivid stories in all of Puranic literature: the unshakeable faith of the child-devotee Prahlad (whose story is also at the heart of Narsimha Chaturdasi), and the spring festival of colors that Lord Krishna himself played in the forests of Vrindavan and the lanes of Barsana. Your family’s Holi — the bonfire the night before, the colored powders, the sweets, the gathering of neighbors — carries both stories in it, whether or not they’re told aloud here in the Bay Area. ISKCON Silicon Valley’s home kirtan program gives them a voice.

Holika Dahan: The Night Devotion Defeated Fire

The eve of Holi is Holika Dahan — the burning of Holika. The story comes from the Srimad Bhagavatam (7th Canto): the demon king Hiranyakashipu, who had received a boon making him nearly impossible to kill, demanded that his own son Prahlad worship him as God. Prahlad refused. His devotion to Lord Vishnu was absolute and unshakeable through every punishment his father devised. Hiranyakashipu tried burning him, throwing him from a cliff, having him trampled by elephants, having serpents bite him, drowning him in the ocean — nothing worked. The Lord’s protection was absolute.

Finally, Hiranyakashipu’s sister Holika — who possessed a shawl that made her immune to fire — sat in a bonfire with Prahlad in her lap, intending to burn him alive. The divine grace worked in reverse: Holika’s shawl flew onto Prahlad, protecting him; Holika burned. The fire, which was meant to destroy devotion, instead became the stage on which devotion triumphed.

Prahlāda Mahārāja said: Because I was protected by the mercy of Lord Viṣṇu, the material energy, represented by fire, could not harm me.

— Srimad Bhagavatam 7.9.17

The spring season that Holi heralds is also the season of Ram Navami — Lord Rama’s appearance day falls in the month of Chaitra, just weeks after Holi. Many Bay Area families who host a Holi kirtan also host one for Ram Navami.

The bonfire we light on Holika Dahan evening is a re-enactment of that moment. It is not a superstition or a cultural habit but a living commemoration: the declaration that genuine love for the Supreme cannot be extinguished. Prahlad’s name — which means “giving joy to all” — itself encodes the message: the devotee who holds to the Lord brings joy even in the midst of persecution.

Krishna’s Holi in Vrindavan and Barsana

The second strand of Holi’s devotional story belongs to Krishna — specifically to the spring Holi he played in Vrindavan with the gopis and his cowherd friends, and the famous Lathmar Holi of Barsana where the women of Radha’s village playfully drove Krishna and his companions away with sticks. The Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, where Krishna spent his childhood, is the original home of Holi as a devotional festival. The throwing of colors represents the joy of love — the spontaneous, overflow-of-the-heart quality of bhakti that cannot be contained or formalized.

In Vrindavan, Holi is not one day but an entire month of celebration leading up to Phalguna Purnima. The Phalguna month — roughly February-March — is the season of spring in Braj, and the songs sung during this month are called phaguwa or hori — devotional Braj compositions that describe Krishna and Radha’s spring pastimes in lyrical, joyful imagery. These songs are still sung in Vrindavan today, and they form the core of the kirtan tradition ISKCON devotees bring to your home.

The Deeper Significance: Colors as Devotion

The Bhagavatam tradition teaches that color itself is a divine quality. Krishna’s beautiful dark-blue complexion — described in the Brahma-samhita as syāmasundara, beautiful like a rain cloud — is the original color from which all beauty derives. When colors fly on Holi morning, they recall that original beauty. The red of Radha’s love, the yellow of spring blossoms, the green of Vrindavan’s forests, the blue of the Yamuna river — Holi’s palette is the palette of devotion.

I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, who is Śyāmasundara, Krishna Himself with inconceivable innumerable attributes, whom the pure devotees see in their heart of hearts with the eye of devotion tinged with the salve of love.

— Brahma-samhita 5.38

Holi also carries a message about the leveling nature of bhakti. On Holi morning, all social distinctions dissolve — children drench elders, neighbors who have not spoken all year laugh together. This spontaneous equality reflects the teaching of the Bhagavatam that in the presence of genuine devotion, the artificial barriers of caste, status, and social role fall away. The cowherd boys of Vrindavan played Holi with the Supreme Lord — and he played back.

Bring a Holi Kirtan Into Your Own Home

ISKCON Silicon Valley’s home kirtan program brings the devotional heart of Holi directly to your family. For the evening before or after your Holi celebration, our devotees come to your home for a two-hour program of live kirtan — energetic, joyful chanting of Radhey Radhey, Radhey Shyam, Hare Krishna, Hare Rama — a short katha drawing from Prahlad’s story and the Braj spring pastimes, and an arati with devotional dance. No cost, no requirements — you open your home, the devotees bring everything. To book a home kirtan Bay Area session, use the Calendly widget above or send a WhatsApp message.

The kirtan style for Holi is drawn from the Braj Vrindavan tradition — the same rasiya-style devotional singing and dance that has filled the alleys of Vrindavan during Holi for centuries. It is energetic, participatory, and joyful — a celebration, not a ceremony. Family members of all ages can participate at whatever level feels natural, from quiet sitting to full-throated chorus.

ISKCON Silicon Valley: Continuing the Braj Devotional Tradition

ISKCON — the International Society for Krishna Consciousness — was founded in 1966 by Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who carried the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition of Vrindavan to the world. ISKCON Silicon Valley in Mountain View has served the Bay Area since 1968. The Gaudiya tradition is the living heir of the Braj devotional culture — the phaguwa songs, the Barsana Holi, the spring kirtans that make Holi a festival of the soul and not merely of the senses. When our devotees come to your home, they bring that lineage with them.
