Bhagavata Seva Fall 2023 -1
If you are looking for spiritual education for your children and live in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley, you have likely come across two names: ISKCON Saturday School and Bal Vikas. Both serve Indian-American and Hindu families. Both teach values, scriptures, and cultural identity. But they come from different traditions and take meaningfully different approaches. Here is a clear comparison to help you decide.
What Is ISKCON Saturday School?
ISKCON Saturday School is a weekly devotional education program run by ISKCON Silicon Valley at the Mountain View temple. It is rooted in the Vaishnava tradition — specifically the Gaudiya Vaishnavism of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, focused on the worship and study of Krishna. The program runs from age 0 to 14, divided into age-appropriate classrooms.
The curriculum centers on:
- Bhagavad Gita — verse-by-verse study adapted to each age group
- Shloka recitation — memorizing Sanskrit verses from the Gita and prayers
- Kirtan — participatory chanting of Hare Krishna and devotional songs
- Character development — Vaishnava values like compassion, honesty, non-violence, and devotion
- Festival and culture — celebrating Janmashtami, Ramanavami, Radhashtami, and other Vaishnava festivals
Classes run on Saturday mornings at the Mountain View temple. They are led by committed Vaishnava devotees who practice what they teach.

What Is Bal Vikas?
Bal Vikas (“Child Development” in Sanskrit) is the educational wing of the Sathya Sai Organization, founded by Sathya Sai Baba. It is more inter-faith in orientation — drawing from Hindu, Christian, Muslim, and other traditions under the umbrella of “Human Values” education. The five Human Values (Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love, Non-Violence) form the curriculum’s core rather than specific Vaishnava scripture or practice.
Bal Vikas centers serve communities across the US and are typically run by local Sai organization chapters. The emphasis is on moral character and universal values, with songs, stories, and activities drawn from multiple world traditions.

Which Is Right for Your Family?

If your family is specifically interested in the Vaishnava tradition — studying the Bhagavad Gita in depth, learning Sanskrit shloka recitation, and participating in the kirtan tradition — ISKCON Saturday School is the stronger fit. The Mountain View temple environment is immersive in a way that a community-center class cannot replicate, and the teachers are practicing devotees living the philosophy they teach.
If you prefer a broader, multi-tradition approach with more emphasis on universal moral values and less emphasis on a specific deity or scripture, Bal Vikas may suit your family better.
Many Bay Area families also choose both — not uncommon in communities where children attend ISKCON Saturday School for Sanskrit and Bhagavad Gita, and Bal Vikas for its character-development activities. The traditions are not mutually exclusive.
