Bhagavata Seva Fall 2023 -1

For millions of Hindu women across India and in the Bay Area diaspora, Karwa Chauth is one of the most personal and powerful days of the devotional calendar. The day-long fast — begun before sunrise without even water, broken only after seeing the moon through a sieve in your husband’s hands — is not a custom imposed from outside. It is a freely chosen act of love, held by generations of women who understood that the strength of devotion, expressed in the body through fasting and prayer, carries real spiritual potency. ISKCON Silicon Valley’s home kirtan program honors that tradition by offering to fill your Karwa Chauth evening with the devotional vibration of live kirtan and katha — a satsang in your home, timed around the moonrise and your own puja, that deepens what you are already doing.

What Is Karwa Chauth?

Karwa Chauth falls on the fourth day of the dark fortnight of Kartik month — four days after the full moon of Sharad Purnima, typically in October. The name comes from karwa (an earthen pot used in the puja) and chauth (fourth). Married women fast from before sunrise until the moon rises that night, keeping the fast without water in many traditions, and performing puja with a karwa pot of water, sweets, and adornments — first to Gauri (Parvati) and then to the rising moon — before breaking the fast in the light of the moon with their husband’s face as the first thing they see through a sieve.

The tradition is primarily observed in North Indian communities — Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana — and has deep roots in the agricultural rhythms of Kartik. The kartik month in the Hindu calendar is itself considered auspicious beyond all other months for spiritual practices (the Bhagavatam and Padma Purana both glorify Kartik as the most sacred month), and Karwa Chauth falls precisely in the middle of this elevated period. The fast is not merely a social custom; it is a vrata — a sacred vow — backed by the full weight of the Puranic tradition of women’s devotion.

The Story of Savitri: The Power Behind the Vow

The Karwa Chauth katha — the story recited during the puja — connects the observance to the wider tradition of wives’ devotional power. The most famous of these stories is that of Savitri and Satyavan from the Mahabharata’s Vana Parva: Savitri, knowing that her husband Satyavan was fated to die within a year, chose to marry him anyway. When Yamaraja, the lord of death, came to claim Satyavan’s soul, Savitri followed, arguing so brilliantly and with such purity of devotion that Yamaraja granted her four boons — and she used them to obtain not just her husband’s life but the flourishing of their entire lineage. Her story is the archetype of what the Karwa Chauth fast embodies: the capacity of a wife’s love and spiritual discipline to transform even the most intractable fate.

The chastity and devotion of a wife toward her husband is so powerful that it can even defeat death itself. Savitri recovered her husband Satyavan from the clutches of Yamaraja through the strength of her vow and her unflinching love.

Bay Area women who observe Karwa Chauth often also celebrate Hartalika Teej — Parvati’s own vrat of devotion to Lord Shiva, observed with an all-night jagran just weeks earlier in the bhakti calendar.

The Kartik month’s connection to Krishna adds another layer of meaning for Vaishnava families. The Bhagavatam describes Kartik as the month most beloved to Lord Vishnu — the month of the Damodara lila, when baby Krishna allowed himself to be bound by the rope of his mother Yashoda’s love. The vrata of Karwa Chauth, with its theme of love strong enough to bind even death, resonates powerfully in the devotional atmosphere of this month.

How Karwa Chauth Is Observed

The day typically begins before sunrise with the sargi — a pre-dawn meal prepared and shared by the mother-in-law, containing sweets, fruits, and nourishing foods to sustain the woman through the fast. After sunrise, the fast begins in earnest. Through the day, women traditionally gather in groups — neighborhood satsangs — to sing the Karwa Chauth songs, hear the katha together, and support one another through the final hours. In the Bay Area, these gatherings happen in living rooms and community centers, carrying forward a tradition of women’s collective devotion that is itself a form of satsang.

At moonrise, the puja is performed: the karwa pot filled with water, decorated sweets and adornments arranged on a thali, the moon viewed through a sieve, the husband’s face seen in that same sieve, and the fast broken with the first sip of water from the karwa. The ritual choreography is precise and meaningful at every step — the sieve through which the moon is seen has the quality of filtering: the wife sees her husband’s face in the same light as the moon, both filtered through the same instrument of devotion.

A devoted wife who fasts and prays for her husband’s long life accumulates immeasurable merit. Her vow is honored throughout the three worlds.

Bring a Karwa Chauth Kirtan Into Your Home

ISKCON Silicon Valley’s home kirtan program is ideally timed for the Karwa Chauth gathering hours — the afternoon and early evening before moonrise, when women traditionally come together for the katha and songs. Our devotees come to your home for a two-hour program of live kirtan and a short katha on the power of women’s devotion from the Bhagavatam and Mahabharata — honoring Savitri, Draupadi, and the gopis of Vrindavan as the supreme examples of love-as-spiritual-practice. The kirtan includes beautiful bhajans of Radha and Krishna’s divine love, which is understood in the Gaudiya tradition as the original template of which all earthly love is a reflection. No cost, no requirements — ISKCON-sponsored, open to all families. To book a home kirtan Bay Area session, use the Calendly widget above or send a WhatsApp message.

The devotional mood of Karwa Chauth — surrender, love, the willingness to sacrifice comfort for another’s wellbeing — maps directly onto the teaching of the Bhagavatam about pure bhakti: doing everything for the beloved’s sake, asking nothing in return. Your Karwa Chauth fast is, from this perspective, one of the most vivid expressions of devotional consciousness in all of Hindu practice. A home kirtan on this evening deepens that already-profound devotion. See footage of past home evenings at @bhajanclubbing.bayarea on Instagram.
