Bhagavata Seva Fall 2023 -1
The first step to learning Sanskrit is learning its script: Devanagari (देवनागरी). Unlike learning a European language where the script is familiar, Sanskrit requires you to learn a new writing system — but it is more systematic and logical than it looks, and most motivated learners can read it within 6–8 weeks. This guide walks you through the structure, sounds, and a practical learning plan.
What Is Devanagari?
Devanagari is an abugida — a writing system where each symbol represents a consonant with an inherent vowel, and vowel signs modify that inherent vowel. It is written left to right, and every word is pronounced exactly as it is spelled. There are no “silent letters” in Sanskrit. Once you know the alphabet, you can read any Sanskrit text perfectly aloud, even before you understand the meaning.
Devanagari is also the script for Hindi, Marathi, and Nepali, so learning it has practical value beyond Sanskrit study.
The Sanskrit Vowels (Svaras)
Sanskrit has 16 vowels. They come in short and long pairs — the distinction matters for both meaning and pronunciation in mantras and poetry:
- अ (a, short) — आ (ā, long, held twice as long)
- इ (i, short) — ई (ī, long)
- उ (u, short) — ऊ (ū, long)
- ऋ (ṛ, a vowelized “r”) — ॠ (ṝ, long)
- ए (e) — ऐ (ai)
- ओ (o) — औ (au)
- Plus the anusvara (ṃ) and visarga (ḥ)
Begin by writing each vowel 10 times and saying it aloud. Associate each symbol with a word you know that contains that sound. The short “a” (अ) sounds like the “u” in “but” — not the “a” in “cat.”

The Sanskrit Consonants (Vyanjanas)
Sanskrit has 36 consonants organized into 5 rows by where in the mouth the sound is produced — this systematic organization is one of the things that makes Sanskrit so logically beautiful:
- Guttural (throat): क ख ग घ ङ
- Palatal (palate): च छ ज झ ञ
- Retroflex (tongue curled back): ट ठ ड ढ ण
- Dental (tongue to teeth): त थ द ध न
- Labial (lips): प फ ब भ म
Within each row, the pattern is consistent: unaspirated, aspirated, voiced, voiced-aspirated, nasal. Once you see the pattern, you know the sound of every consonant from its position in the table.
There are also semi-vowels (य र ल व), sibilants (श ष स), and the aspirate ह.
Vowel Marks (Matras)
When a vowel other than the inherent short “a” follows a consonant, it is written as a vowel mark (matra) attached to the consonant rather than as a separate symbol. For example: क = ka, कि = ki, की = kī, कु = ku, कू = kū, के = ke, को = ko. Learning the matras is the second major step after learning the base characters.

The Conjunct Consonants
When two consonants appear without a vowel between them, they join into a “conjunct” form. These can look quite different from the originals and are the main stumbling block for beginners. Sanskrit texts — especially the Bhagavad Gita — are dense with conjuncts. A Sanskrit teacher will help you recognize the most common ones systematically rather than encountering them randomly.
How Long Does It Take to Learn Devanagari?
Most beginners who practice 15–20 minutes daily can:
- Recognize all 16 vowels in 3–5 days
- Write all vowels from memory in 1 week
- Recognize all 36 consonants in 2–3 weeks
- Read simple Sanskrit words fluently in 6–8 weeks
Reading Bhagavad Gita verses (which include conjuncts and complex constructions) typically takes 2–3 months of consistent practice. Once you have the alphabet down, our guide on how to learn Sanskrit as a complete beginner covers the next steps: grammar, pronunciation, and reading full verses.
Start With a Teacher
While apps and YouTube videos can introduce Devanagari, they cannot correct your pronunciation in real time — and Sanskrit pronunciation matters. ISKCON Silicon Valley offers Sanskrit classes for beginners online, starting from the very first letter. Classes are free, taught by experienced devotee-teachers, and available to students age 6.5 and up. Children’s shloka recitation classes (Junior and Senior levels) also provide a structured introduction to Devanagari through memorization and song.
Every journey through Sanskrit begins with the same first stroke: अ. Start there.
