Host a Narsimha Chaturdasi Kirtan at Home | Bay Area | ISKCON SV

Bhagavata Seva Fall 2023 -1

Narsimha Chaturdasi is one of the most powerful days in the Vaishnava calendar — yet it is often observed quietly, in homes where a small puja is performed and the story of Prahlad is told to children before bed — the same Prahlad whose devotion is also at the root of Holi. If your family keeps this observance, even in its simplest form, you are doing something profound: you are honoring the moment when the Supreme Lord himself appeared in an impossible form — half-lion, half-man — to protect his devotee from the greatest tyranny imaginable here in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley. ISKCON Silicon Valley’s home kirtan program gives that story the full devotional voice it deserves.

The Story of Prahlad and Lord Narsimha

The story is told in vivid, precise detail in the Srimad Bhagavatam’s Seventh Canto. Hiranyakashipu was a demon king who had received extraordinary boons: he could not be killed by human or animal, neither inside nor outside a building, neither during day nor night, neither on the ground nor in the air, neither by any weapon nor by hand. With this apparent invincibility, he declared himself God and banned the worship of Vishnu throughout his kingdom.

His own son Prahlad refused. From infancy, Prahlad had been a pure devotee of Lord Vishnu — he chanted Vishnu’s names, instructed his fellow students in bhakti, and remained unshaken through every punishment his father devised. Hiranyakashipu tried burning him, throwing him from a cliff, having him trampled by elephants, having serpents bite him, drowning him in the ocean — nothing worked. The Lord’s protection was absolute.

Finally, in a moment of fury, Hiranyakashipu struck a palace pillar with his fist and demanded to know where Prahlad’s God was. From within the pillar, Lord Vishnu appeared in a form that simultaneously satisfied every condition of the boon: half-lion, half-man (neither human nor animal), at the threshold of the palace hall (neither inside nor outside), at the twilight hour (neither day nor night), lifting Hiranyakashipu onto his lap (neither on the ground nor in the air), and tearing him apart with his fingernails (no weapon). Every parameter of the impossible boon was perfectly navigated.

Lord Nṛsiṃhadeva is here, and He is also there on the other side. Wherever I go, there Lord Nṛsiṃha is. He is outside and within my heart and He is also in the heart of all living beings. Thus I take shelter of Lord Nṛsiṃha, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead.

— Nrsimha Pranama

What Narsimha Chaturdasi Celebrates

Narsimha Chaturdasi falls on the fourteenth day (Chaturdasi) of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha month — typically in May. It marks the appearance of Lord Narsimhadeva, the fourth among the ten principal avatars of Lord Vishnu described in the Bhagavatam. The day is observed with fasting until evening, the chanting of Narsimha prayers and the Narsimha Kavacham, and an account of Prahlad’s story.

In the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, Narsimhadeva is celebrated as the protector of devotees par excellence. His fierce appearance at the moment Prahlad called for help establishes a principle that runs through all of bhakti: the Lord appears when the devotee genuinely needs him, in whatever form is necessary, regardless of the laws of nature or the apparent power of opposition. Narsimha’s roar at the moment of appearance is said to have silenced the entire universe. The prayers to Narsimhadeva — ito nṛsiṃhaḥ, parato nṛsiṃhaḥ (“Nrsimha here, Nrsimha there — wherever I go, Lord Nrsimha is there”) — are among the most powerful protection mantras in the Vaishnava tradition.

Prahlad’s Teaching: Bhakti Is the Only Real Protection

Prahlad’s response to Narsimhadeva after the demon’s death is theologically remarkable. When the Lord, still burning with ferocity, asked Prahlad what boon he wanted, Prahlad refused to ask for anything material. He said he had no desire for wealth, power, longevity, or liberation — only continued devotion to the Lord’s lotus feet. This is considered the ideal of a pure devotee: asking for nothing except the ability to go on serving. Narsimhadeva, moved by this purity, blessed Prahlad and also purified the souls of the demoniac ancestors for seven generations past and future — simply because of one pure devotee in the family line.

My dear Lord, I do not pray to You for the eight perfections of mystic yoga, nor for salvation from repeated birth and death. I only pray that I may always be situated in devotional service to Your lotus feet.

— Prahlad Maharaj, Srimad Bhagavatam 7.10.4

Bring a Narsimha Chaturdasi Kirtan Into Your Own Home

The story of Prahlad and Narsimhadeva is ideally told in an atmosphere of devotional singing — where the same names that Prahlad chanted (Vishnu, Narsimha, Govinda) fill the room through live kirtan. ISKCON Silicon Valley’s home program brings devotees to your home for a two-hour evening of Narsimha kirtan and Prahlad katha: powerful chanting of Narsimha prayers and Hare Krishna, a narration of the Bhagavatam story that brings Prahlad’s courage alive for children and adults alike, and an arati. No cost, no requirements — ISKCON-sponsored, open to all families.

Many families use this evening as a teaching moment for children: the story of a child who stood by his faith under impossible circumstances is one of the most inspiring in all of scripture, and the kirtan setting makes it memorable and alive in a way that reading alone cannot. ISKCON Silicon Valley: Upholding the Tradition of Bhakti-Protection

ISKCON — the International Society for Krishna Consciousness — was established by Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in 1966 and has operated in Mountain View, California as ISKCON Silicon Valley since 1968. The Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition maintains an unbroken lineage of Narsimha worship and Prahlad-bhakti teaching. Srila Prabhupada frequently cited Prahlad as the supreme example of devotion under pressure — a model especially relevant for devotees living in a secular world.
